The Tomte is famous in the world of Scandinavian folklore<\/a> and shares a lot of the features of the traditional gnome which is why they sometimes get confused for each other. They are typically found on people’s homes and farms and are thought to keep these and the adults and children of the place safe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A Tomten has a red hat, long white beard and their body shape is similar to a gnome and these things are why they are often mistaken for gnomes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They have been featured in some literature over the years such as Viktor Rydberg<\/a>‘s pre-1900s poem called ‘Tomten’ which is often read at Christmas<\/a> time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Swedish gnomes are called Tomte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Whilst they are similar, the main differences are that they look slightly different to traditional gnomes and that they originate from Scandinavian countries whilst gnomes originate from Germany and were taken around Europe<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n ‘Tomten’ means Santa Claus\/Father Christmas in Swedish<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Tomte is thought to protect families in Sweden<\/a> by guarding their homes and farmland. It is a popular figure in folklore<\/a> and, whilst shares a number of physical features with gnomes<\/a>, is considered to be a different creature. They are also thought to bring good luck to their owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Christmas Neesa is thought to be a creature from Nordic folklore.
